Acappella Classic
Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

This is Kevin Schaffer, Jerome Williams and me singing He Gave Her Water at Acappella’s 20th Anniversary concert in Oklahoma. I thought I’d include some photos from the archives from time to time, (with and without mullets.) How many of you attended that concert? What about the 25th Anniversary? How many of you are planning [...]

Lately, I’ve been focusing so much on attempting to take professional quality photos, that I’ve overlooked the joy of snapping an impromptu photo with a compact camera. Here’s one taken of the Washington Mall showing the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and the Capitol building. Washington is a fun place to visit.

I asked the question on facebook today about how long you remember the message of the sermons that you hear? And, if the situation is as I suspect, what can we do to increase the impact of the message by increasing the retention rate? What is the difference in a spoken sermon and a musical [...]

Recording Sessions Praise & Harmony
Monday, September 28th, 2009

Photo by Mary Lewis – – Yes, it’s hard work to audition for, then learn and rehearse 25 songs for a professional recording. But, it can be very rewarding. The rewarding experience can be fun as well. Notice the faces of these previous participants. We hope to recruit more singers than ever for our next [...]

Praise & Harmony Workshops
Monday, September 28th, 2009

Although there are no mountains near Sherman, Texas, we definitely enjoyed a mountain top worship experience in Sherman this past weekend. We fellowshipped with the ministers and elders during the weekend. Saturday evening flew by as evidence of the congregation’s thorough preparation all came together in heart-warming praise. I taught a class on worship leading [...]

Learning shaped notes is the quickest way to teach a novice how to sight read music. When people understand the significance of the shape and the intervals, the notes on the page quickly come alive. Last night in Sherman, we shared handouts of the “moveable DO” in a chart that demystifies the concept, especially for [...]

Upcoming Praise & Harmony Workshops

This weekend, we are enjoying a Praise & Harmony celebration at the Western Heights church of Christ in Sherman, Texas. I hope to see some friends from across north Texas and southern Oklahoma. Also, if you are in the middle Tennessee area, you can hear Durant tonight at the Music City Sheraton, in concert with [...]

This Nashville restaurant is a special treat, especially if you sample their daily (lunch-time) gourmet buffet (I know, it sounds like an oxy-moron: gourmet and buffet?) On Sundays (and maybe Saturdays?), Ellendale’s boasts a brunch with an omelette bar that’s to die for. Where else can you choose pesto, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes and such to [...]

Worship Leader Institute
Friday, September 25th, 2009

I am of the opinion that the church is experiencing an extreme drought when it comes to well-prepared and qualified worship leaders who are available to serve. Although we have seen an outstanding emphasis on training preachers and youth ministers (including graduate training), education for worship ministers has been pitifully inadequate in the circles that [...]
