Are We Saved by Grace or by our own Goodness?Acappella, Acappella Classic, Spiritual Topics & Discussion Wednesday, September 18th, 2013
There was no small controversy when we released this song, “Criminal On The Cross.” While reading a Max Lucado book, I was inspired by a chapter title, “The Tale of the Crucified Crook,” to write, “Criminal On The Cross.”
Apparently, many people want to cling to the idea that we need to earn our salvation. The fact is, we could never earn our salvation. The entire point of this song is: I’m saved as a gift from God and I don’t deserve it. Praise God! He saved me! Not because I am good; but because He is good!
A video of Acappella singing this song was included on one of Bill and Gloria Gaither’s Homecoming videos called LANDMARK. You can order the video here. And, you can order the original version of this song from the Sweet Fellowship CD here.
Here’s a version by the original quartet who recorded “Criminal On The Cross.” This video is from a 1989 concert:
And yet a later version of the song when Acappella was on tour in Japan:
I hope you get a chance to see the Gaither Video version of the song, you can find here.
