This is a friendly “battle of the bands” segment during the song, “Everybody Said But Nobody Did.”

Acappella and Acappella Classic will be featured in the kick-off concert, June 30, 7 PM in Collins Alumni Auditorium, Lipscomb University, Nashville, TN for Acappella’s 30th Anniversary Celebration.  The celebration continues June 30 – July 3.

Here’s some background on this clip, taken during the Amarillo concert on April 13 of this year. I believe the singers had more fun than the audience, and the audience had a great time!

Being a tenor, we always have a laugh about how I attempt to sing bass. I’ve found many high tenors wish they could sing low, while many basses wish to sing high. (Isn’t that human nature?) During the opening of the song, “He Gave Her Water,” I was playing around with humming the lowest notes in my range directly into the microphone. Spontaneously, and unbeknownst to me, Rodney Britt threw in an ultra deep bass note,  surprising me and giving the illusion that I can actually sing bass.  This reminds me of the television commercial of the young child dressed as Darth Vader, who was stunned when the automobile magically turns on at the exact moment of his playful, mind control.

During our 30-year history, we’ve been blessed by the talents of many Christian vocalists. The reunion concerts will be a time of sweet fellowship and great memories. We enjoyed an appetizer for the grand reunion on April 13. The Central Church in Amarillo, where Acappella veteran, Kevin Schaffer serves as worship minister, sponsored a combined Acappella and Acappella Classic concert. I truly believe that the singers had more fun than the audience did for this grand reunion!

One morning, Kevin asked us to sing for their “Loaves and Fishes” ministry, distributing food to those in need in the local community. I love this picture as it shows Steve Maxwell really “getting with it” as Classic sings for the crowd gathered that morning.

Several have asked me about what it would take to sponsor an Acappella / Classic combined reunion concert at their church.  It’s simple.  You only need two things: 1. Sponsor 2. This April 13th concert served as a great warm-up for the 30th anniversary celebrations, June 30 – July 5 in Nashville, TN. Hope you will join us for this special reunion time in Tennessee.

At the last minute, we decided to add “Everybody Praise His Name” to the concert line up. Since the original arrangement was only three parts, I threw together a quick arrangement, transforming a three-part song into a seven-voice arrangement. Check out this fun video here.

On this same day, we were blessed to sing for the “Loaves and Fishes” ministry at Central.

I often joke about how major news happens whenever Sharon and I travel to an area. It’s somewhat frightening when we barely miss a major earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand last year, for example. As we were arriving into Amarillo, a storm arrived along with us at the exact same time which was reported by national media with reported drifts of hail measuring up to four feet . . .  The concert at Central is certain to be a powerful force!
