Would You Swap Your Voice Range?

Photo by Richard Hooi – Do you know your vocal range? (Are you a bass, tenor, alto or soprano?) Secondly, are you happy with your range, or do you wish you had a different range? I ask this because I know a lot of tenors who wish they were basses. I find a lot of basses who wish they could sing high tenor. What about you? Are you happy where you are, or would you prefer a different range?

Earliest memories of church songs?

For those of you who grew up around singing, what are the earliest memories of hymns and spiritual songs? We can’t help but laugh at the way children hear songs like “Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me,” and “Gladly the cross-eyed bear.” I remember hearing my Dad and Grandfather leading songs in the small, one-room, country church house near Dover, Tennessee. How about you? Was there singing in your home? On vacations? What are the first songs you remember?

Impact of International Mission Trips

Have you participated with an international mission trip? I’m hearing of more rank and file Christians choosing to cross borders for the purpose of ministering to others. In most cases, the mission trip seems to positively change the person going as much or more as the mission destination. A variety of trips provide opportunities for Christians to use their various gifts to serve others through medical missions, shelter construction and a myriad of other outlets of ministry. Youth groups are widely known to travel together for specific missions.

The Park Plaza church of Christ in Tulsa, Oklahoma is serious about mobilizing as many members as possible to participate in some form of missions and the benefits are tremendous. I can attest to the rewards of experiencing missions as a family. How about you? Have you joined mission efforts? It seems that international experiences can draw us outside of our normal comfort zones and broaden our perspectives. Take the poll and share your thoughts.

Christmas and over-commercialization?

Inter-Congregational Unity Sunday morning?

Here is a photo I captured of one of the many bridges in Charleston, West Virginia. This shot made me think about building bridges of unity with other Christians. I’m highly encouraged about our workshop with the Kanawha City church of Christ. One reason is the fact that more than one congregation will be joining together for the Sunday morning worship. I have seen several regions where churches have “area wide” worship services on Sunday nights or other evenings. However, it is a rare example when a congregation will alter their regular Sunday morning service in order to assemble with others.

It’s much easier to gather with others when it doesn’t conflict with your largest gathering of the week. Do you think your church would be willing to meet with others, perhaps at a neutral location on a Sunday morning? Take the poll and leave a comment.

Grocery shopping in Capetown

Yami, our South African promoter did an outstanding job of coordinating this trip, including this service project. Here’s a photo of the guys at a new grocery store, collecting items requested by a Capetown retirement home. The administrator was very pleased to receive this gift that was presented in love. As a minister, I have been blessed to serve churches who have a reputation for helping those in need. How important do you believe that it is for the local church to be involved in these types of ministries?
