Taking Worship Seriously in Martinez

Martinez is definitely serious about worship. We enjoyed a wonderful Praise & Harmony weekend, hosted by this vibrant congregation. Normally, during the course of my workshops, I am lamenting the fact that most churches fail to invest in their song leaders (worship leaders) and place worship renewal as a very low priority. The Martinez Church sponsored nine of their song leaders for training last year and are continuing this notable trend. What a great example for other churches to follow!

Throughout the Praise & Harmony weekend, we were able to explore various ways of seeking excellence through a customized strategy for this particular congregation. I’m optimistically anticipating great reports from Colby and the Station Camp Church.

Packed House in Tolar, Texas

Photo by Elaine Green – The house was literally packed in Tolar, Texas for the Praise and Harmony Workshop. Christians attended from many different congregations. Everyone sat in sections by voice part to make learning the parts much easier. Notice in the picture the signs posted for the alto and bass sections on the right half of the auditorium.

Refocusing Priorities in Carlsbad, New Mexico

Photo by Karla Hamel – This past weekend, we enjoyed a very enthusiastic response to the Praise & Harmony Workshop with the Sunset Church in Carlsbad, New Mexico. In addition to the Saturday Workshop, a combined Sunday School dealt with the topic of worship and the morning assembly focused on singing and praise. We look forward to hearing about the future of the church in Carlsbad.

Praise & Harmony in Mito, Japan

In our first bi-lingual Praise & Harmony Workshop, Atsushi (minister of the Mito Church) served as an outstanding interpreter. Mike McLain served as the primary coordinator for the details, including prepping us for the trip and teaching us songs in Japanese.

Your Entire Church As The Choir

Photo by Myron Harper – My daily class topic at Pepperdine for the Praise & Harmony sessions were entitled, “Making your entire church the choir.” If you have attended any of my workshops around the world, you’ll know that I always begin with my most important point: We need to encourage 100% participation in the worship and singing during our assemblies.

Over the three days, we discussed practical ways to move toward this goal. For those of you who have experienced this kind of worship, you can affirm that there is nothing like it! I also presented many practical tips on teaching non-musicians how to learn to sing harmony. Of course, no discussion on this topic is complete without addressing the important role of worship leading.

Taking It Higher in Laurel, Maryland

Photo by Myron Harper – The singing was simply amazing at the Laurel Church of Christ on Saturday evening. It was obvious how well they had done their homework, as they were well prepared for an evening of praise, featuring the songs from “Only God.” This church has grown tremendously since our original workshop with them a few years ago.
